Design
The Flight Director Attitude Indicator (FDAI), nicknamed the “8-ball” was a key instrument installed on the Lunar Module to monitor the spacecraft’s attitude (orientation). In addition to the attitude, it also acted as a flight director to guide pilot inputs and orient the spacecraft correctly. The ball rotated freely in three axes using a mechanism comprising multiple hollow shells, to allow such movement. The Lunar Module had two FDAIs, one for the commander and one for the pilot, allowing cross checks and backup in case of instrument failure. Some FDAIs were later repurposed for use in the Space Shuttle simulator.
