Design

The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was the onboard digital computer for both the Command Module and Lunar Module, handling guidance, navigation, and control functions. It was the first computer built using silicon integrated circuits and operated at only 2.048 MHz, yet it reliably performed complex real-time tasks in space. This design features the custom human interface called the DSKY (“display and keyboard”) where astronauts entered commands with “Verb / Noun” codes. The AGC used core rope memory for read-only code storage and magnetic core memory for rewritable data. It was also built with minimal physical size (roughly 24×12.5×6.5 in) and weighed about 32 kg. During the Apollo 11 landing, the AGC’s design proved resilient under pressure when 1201/1202 “executive overflow” alarms triggered - but the system gracefully prioritized critical tasks and recovered, allowing the mission to continue and land successfully.
