Apollo Pressure Valve Tee

Design

The pressure equalization valve was built into the Command Module’s forward hatch, which connected the spacecraft to the Lunar Module through the docking tunnel. Before the hatch could be opened, the valve allowed air pressure inside the cabin to be balanced with that of the tunnel or vacuum outside. Operated by a small offset handle, it could vent the cabin in under a minute - crucial for preparing an EVA or quickly extinguishing a fire. Though simple in appearance, the valve embodied Apollo’s engineering philosophy: redundancy, accessibility, and absolute reliability in life-critical systems.
